The air is getting icier and that first snowfall is imminent, have you prepared your home for winter? We’ve been told to brace ourselves for a “classic Canadian winter” this year, which basically means we can expect tons of snow, icy temperatures and probably a whole lot of indoor activities. As Canadians, winter is a time we inevitably spend more time indoors at home, so it’s important to do a seasonal cleaning and check certain areas of the home to prevent certain issues as the freezing temperatures arrive. Here’s a useful checklist to help make sure your home is all set before the harsh winter weather sets in.

home tips

  1. Put away your outdoor Furniture. Don’t wait until the middle of a blustery snowstorm to make sure your precious outdoor furniture is safely stowed away. The harsh elements of Canadian winter can easily ruin anything left in it’s path, so store your outdoor furniture somewhere safe and sheltered away from any snow, ice or heavy winds.

2. Make sure your eaves troughs have been cleaned and are free of leaves and any other debris that might block your down spouts and cause flooding or expensive roofing issues.

3. Check for cracks in your foundation, bricks or stucco- these will only be made worse by ice and freezing temperatures. Fix them while they’re only a minor issue as opposed to a major (pricey) problem.

4. Check your chimney for cracks as well, and crumbling mortar. Be sure to clean the chimney flue also before a long winter of cozy nights by the fire!

5. Check for any existing leaks or issues underneath your sinks or toilets that might lead to burst pipes or other issues when the weather turns colder.
